Marianne De Maeseneer MD PhD works as staff member, in charge of Phlebology, at the Department of Dermatology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, Netherlands and is also associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Antwerp, Belgium, active in teaching phlebology to medical students. As to clinical research she initially studied the problem of recurrent varicose veins after surgical treatment and this resulted in a PhD thesis, which she defended in 2005.
Her academic interests have further focused on treatment strategies for varicose veins, prevention of recurrence, the use of duplex ultrasound before and after intervention, diagnosis and treatment of superficial vein thrombosis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of deep vein thrombosis, management of postthrombotic syndrome and inferior vena cava atresia.

She has authored and co-authored over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several chapters in different textbooks, in English, Dutch and Spanish. She coordinated publication of the UIP consensus document on duplex ultrasound reporting after varicose vein treatment. She acts as Associate Editor for the European Journal for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery (for manuscripts about venous subjects), co-editor of the online journal Veins and Lymphatics, and reviewer for British Journal of Surgery, Phlebology a.o.

She is past president of the European Venous Forum and organized the 11th Annual Meeting of the EVF in Antwerp in June 2010. She is also very active as a board member of the Benelux Society of Phlebology, in particular in preparing the annual scientific meeting of this society since 2003. Actually she is one of the five vice-presidents of UIP, taking care of the northern half of Europe.
